Gracing the Butler’s Pantry in this grand Pacific Heights home designed by Julius E. Krafft in 2012′s Decorator’s Showcase home are gorgeous zinc countertops by Mio Metals.

We do show our bias when tooting our horns, don’t we? Kidding aside, Mio Metals/Copperworks are thrilled to be part of the 35th annual showcase home. Working with designer Allison Dehn Bloom, we had an interesting challenge facing us both – the existing granite countertops needed to be intact at the completion of the showcase. That meant that the smartest thing to do was to not move them and find away to display our countertops, which are normally laminated to 3/4″ thick plywood prior to leaving our shop, on top of the existing slabs of stone.

I was able to ask for a little creative license with the finish on the zinc. This gave me a chance to test out a few new techniques, and show Ms. Bloom a few variations for her final decision. We ended up with a medium polish and just a touch of patina. Keep in mind that these countertops will not be in use so the natural patina that forms from everyday spills and washing won’t be present.

At the conclusion of the show, we will be removing the zinc and the granite will be untouched. We would prefer to have made a more permanent display – our seams would be better and more resilient.

We have been selected to enhance the “caterer’s kitchen” (aka a kitchen larger than mine) with zinc countertops. The challenge this year, is that it is not to be permanent. We will be installing our zinc on top of their existing granite countertops which they want returned to the original condition.

An interesting challenge, but with the work that we have been shipping out lately, this is something we can handle.

We are working hard to get a number of zinc countertop orders out this week for installation prior to Thanksgiving. Tomorrow we ship one out to New York, followed by another New York shipment on Monday and California deliveries scheduled for later next week.

We are also thinking of snow, but that’s a future post.

This restaurant has been in operation since 1946 and anticipation is building for the latest incarnation from Tyler Florence and Sammy Hagar. One thing is for certain, they will have an amazing zinc countertop for their bar, and if Tyler Florence is involved, the food will be memorable.
